    Dear Sir,

Your recent message to the 2nd Annual UMD Global Conference constitutes an affront to all Greek people, including the numerous Greek community in Canada. You take the liberty to call the a country recognized internationally as FYROM (Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia as per U.N. Security Council Decision 817/1993) as «Macedonia» and its inhabitants as «Macedonians». Subscribing thus to views of a fraction of people with extremist nationalist rhetoric and visions for a future unified Macedonian state at the expense of neighboring Greece. Greece who is an ally of Canada long before the existence of FYROM.

I will not go into great length to explain that the name Macedonia is (and was) Greek for over 3000 years and the adoption of this name by the ex Yugoslav Republic (which happens to occupy today only a small portion of the land of Ancient Macedonia) is only related to post communist propaganda (please see the historical reference below) and constitutes a pure provocation for us Greeks. The inhabitants of FYROM have nothing to do with Macedonians or Alexander the Great and the glorious past of Macedonian empire extending all the way to India. Despite all those historic facts, and as a gesture of pure goodwill, many Greeks are willing to envisage settlement of the name dispute by the adoption by FYROM of a constitutional composite name with clear geographic content (for example Republic of Upper Macedonia), but this single name is to be used «erga omnes».

I therefore protest to what I consider as blunt ignorance not only of history but also of International Law and conventions. And I consider your positions as non constructive in the settlement of the name dispute. It is our right as citizens of a democratic country, Greece, to oppose the entrance of FYROM into NATO and the European Union as long as the name issue is not resolved between the two neighboring countries and the extremist nationalist rhetoric and visions of expansion are abandoned. By the way I fail to understand how Canada can have a say about the entrance of FYROM in the E.U.

    With regards,

    a simple citizen of Greece
